Enhancing Clay Soil
Clay soil, while nutrient-rich and moisture-retentive, often struggles with density and poor drainage. The best way to improve it is by consistently adding organic matter like compost or well-rotted manure. This helps bind clay particles, creating vital air and water pockets for better drainage and root growth. Aim for a few inches annually, mixed into the topsoil.
Gypsum can help sodic (alkali) clay by improving its structure, but only use it if a soil test confirms high sodium. Avoid adding sand, as it can worsen the problem. Other beneficial practices include planting cover crops, occasional aeration followed by organic matter, and using raised beds for an immediate solution. Mulching also gradually adds organic matter.
Improving clay soil is a patient process, but the long-term benefits of healthier soil are well worth the effort. Cheers
