Great Laurel

Our featured flower of the month is Great Laurel. The Great Laurel (Rhododendron maximum), also known as the Rosebay Rhododendron, is a massive, cold-hardy evergreen shrub native to eastern North America, where it forms dense under story thickets along the cool, damp stream banks and mountain valleys of the Appalachian range. While it can reach towering heights in the wild, it typically maintains a manageable 6 to 10 feet in cultivation, thriving in conditions that mimic its native woodland habitat. Successful cultivation requires a location with partial to full dappled shade protected from harsh winter winds, alongside highly acidic, organically rich soil that offers excellent drainage to prevent root rot. Because its fibrous root system is exceptionally shallow, gardeners must avoid digging around its base and instead apply a thick layer of organic mulch to regulate moisture and soil temperature. Valued for its intense cold hardiness and its ability to extend the gardening season, this robust shrub produces striking clusters of white-to-pink blossoms in late summer, offering a vital late-season food source for pollinators well after other rhododendrons have faded.
