Sassy Saxifrage

Native primarily to the cold, high-altitude regions of the Northern Hemisphere, Saxifrage (genus Saxifraga, meaning “stone-breaker”) originated in alpine tundra, rocky crevices, and mountainous habitats across Europe, Asia, and North America. Adapting to harsh conditions, these resilient perennials are prized in horticulture as low-growing ground cover’s ideal for rock gardens, gravel beds, and stone walls. Cultivating saxifrage requires sharply draining, gritty soil and cooler temperatures, as excessive heat and water logging easily lead to root rot. Most species thrive in partial shade to full sun with moderate, consistent moisture, making them popular choices for adding compact foliage mats and delicate spring flowers to alpine landscaping. Cheers
