My honeysuckle shrubs have thrived for over 40 years in my garden’s landscape. Tatarian honeysuckle (Lonicera tatarica) is a woody shrub native to eastern Asia, including Siberia and parts of China and the Himalayas. It was introduced to North America in the mid-18th century (around 1752) as an ornamental plant, valued for its attractive flowers and use in landscaping, including as windbreaks.
This species is highly adaptable and can thrive in a wide range of conditions, from full sun to partial shade, and in various soil types including loamy, sandy, gravelly, moist, or dry. Its cultivation and spread in North America were initially intentional, but its vigorous growth and reproductive success quickly led to it becoming an invasive species across much of the continent.
